Glass fiber continuous mat is a new type of glass fiber non-woven reinforcing material for composite materials. It is made of continuous glass fibers randomly distributed in a circle and bonded with a small amount of adhesive by the mechanical action between the raw fibers, which is referred to as continuous mat. It belongs to the national high-tech product and new product.
Fiberglass chopped strand mat is a kind of reinforcing material which is cut into a certain length of chopped fibers from glass fiber strands and bonded by powder binder or emulsion binder.
We can see the obvious difference between the two kinds of mats from the basic definition above. Although they are both made of raw silk, one has passed the chopped cut, and the other has not passed the chopped cut.
Now let’s introduce the two kinds of mats in terms of performance!
1. Continuous mat
(1) The product is tear-resistant, because the continuous mat strands are continuously looped, isotropic and high in strength (the strength is about 1-1.5 times that of chopped strand mat), and tear-resistant.
(2) The surface finish of the product is high and can be used for decorative surfaces.
(3) Product designability. It can be used for different product requirements and molding processes through the change of mat layer and tightness and different adhesives, such as pultrusion, RTM, vacuum casting, and molding.
(4) It is easy to cut, has good flexibility and film coating, is easy to form, and can adapt to more complex molds
2. Performance of chopped strand mat
(1) Chopped strand mats
do not have the tight interlacing points of fabrics, and are easy to absorb resin. The resin content of the product is large (50-75%), so that the product has good sealing performance and no leakage, and makes the product resistant to water and other media. Corrosion performance is improved, and appearance quality is also improved.
(2) The chopped strand mat is not as dense as the fabric, so it is easy to thicken when used to make reinforced products, and the production process of the chopped strand mat is less than that of the fabric, and the cost is also lower. The use of the chopped strand mat can reduce the cost of the product.
(3) The fibers in the chopped strand mat are non-directional, and the surface is rougher than the fabric, so the interlayer adhesion is good, so that the product is not easy to delaminate, and the strength of the product is isotropic.
(4) The fibers in the chopped strand mat are discontinuous, so after the product is damaged, the damaged area is small and the strength is reduced less.
(5) Resin permeability, resin permeability is good, the infiltration speed is fast, the curing speed is accelerated, and the production efficiency is improved. Generally, the resin infiltration speed is less than or equal to 60 seconds.
(6) Film-covering performance, peritoneal performance is good, easy to cut, easy to construct, suitable for making products with complex shapes
The performance of the two mats is different, and there are obvious differences in use. Glass fiber continuous mats are mainly used in pultrusion profiles, RTM processes, dry-type transformers, while glass fiber chopped strand mats are mostly used in hand lay-up molding, molding, machine-made boards and other places.
